Addiction recovery is too often a process that never even begins. The first and most important step anyone who is suffering from addiction can take is to recognize that their habits have reached the point where they are having a detrimental effect on the user’s life. This can be the most challenging aspect of recovering from addiction because it requires the user to take a brutally honest look at their own behavior.

Unfortunately, the nature of addiction often makes this crucial act of introspection difficult or even impossible. Modern studies of brain activity have shown that addiction can actually rewire the brain in ways that makes recognition of the harm being done by abusing substances difficult or even impossible to the user. For many of these people, it will therefore be necessary to hit rock bottom, the point at which the damage from drug abuse becomes so clear that there is simply no longer any way to ignore it. This may include ending up in jail or prison, getting fired from one’s job, having a serious health consequences, or all of the above. Luckily, no matter what the ultimate cause of a drug user’s realization that they need help, today treatment options that are more effective and accessible are available.

Our addiction recovery program

GMR Recovery drug rehab centers take a unique approach to drug treatment that is based on science and on the power of forming a strong community of recovering users who all share a singular goal–achieving lasting sobriety.

Upon entering our substance abuse treatment facility in Alameda, California, the first thing our client will do is undergo a thorough detoxification. Our drug detox clinic in Alameda has the capability to handle all client profiles, from the weekend recreational stimulant user to the lifelong alcoholic. The detox process will be very different from individual to individual. It depends on history, withdrawal symptoms and drug of abuse. But one thing that all cases have in common is that, by the time detox is complete, the client will be completely sober and no longer experiencing withdrawal symptoms or the acute cravings that come with detoxification.

A complete detox is second in importance only to the initial recognition by the user of the problematic nature of their drug or alcohol use. Studies have shown that without total detoxification, the chance of any user attaining drug abstinence is virtually zero.

Upon detox being completed, the client will then see a mental health professional employed by our Alameda drug rehab facility. The purpose of this screening is to determine if there are any underlying mental conditions that may be driving or exacerbating the substance abuse. It has been estimated that as many as 50 percent of those with advanced substance abuse problems have underlying mental health conditions. This is important, as treatment programs will vary according to the underlying cause of the substance abuse. Studies have shown that those who have serious mental health conditions and abuse drugs do so as a form of self-medication. This stands in contrast to those who abuse drugs or alcohol in the absence of mental illness. The latter group may use substances for a wide variety of reasons, including thrill seeking, social anxiety or simply through an escalation of habitual drinking that becomes problematic.

After being screened, the client will enter the main addiction treatment center. Our addiction recovery facility in Alameda, California is designed around a community-based treatment model. This means that the addiction recovery center has many group activities aimed at building trust, rapport, and camaraderie. The addiction treatment facility also employs many employees who have endured struggles with addiction. This allows for the establishment of equal relationships among clients and staff, as well as the formation of genuine empathy towards the client.
